Jerremy Akiyama: Mag shoot

koshiki5

On an island approx 100kg south of my hometown, there is a paradise where few fishermen are able to access these remote rocks.
I had wanted to go to this island for a long time and this opportunity for a magazine shoot suddenly popped up.

The weather conditions were less than favorable with little swell to create the white wash required for the blackfin seabass fishing. But then again, I didn’t really have much of a choice as to what day I could go. It was either this week or the next week which was looking even worse.

Thanks to the vast number of fish stock, I was still able to pull out a few fish from the little amount of bubbles on the surface.
I usually get results with surface lures like the old school tide pencil or the manic series when there is little to no white wash, but the beach walker was my saviour of the day.

The island’s shore line is basically a massive cliff face making it almost imposible to access from land.
Thanks to the local anglers though, there were a few ropes down to the rocks in some of the major fishing spots. Pretty scary stuff trecking down a cliff face with a few old ropes that have been there for god knows how long….

My final spot for the trip was a big gamble. From looking at the aerial photos and maps it looked accessible but I happened to come accross a 10m cliff right at the end. Its heart breaking to be so close, yet so far…. Doubling back and traversing accross to another ridge, I was finally able to get down to the rocks.

I quickly rigged up my search bait, which is generally the Tide Minnow Slim 140 to look for the hot spots and it wasn’t long before I had my first fish on the rocks. The hour and a half treck down to the rocks were well worth the hike as I was able to pull out 8 blackfins with in the 1 hour fishing time I had.

Its something special to be able to find new fishing grounds but even better when you get trophy size fish like this one!

I’d like to thank Mr. Kotabe and Tsuribitosha for providing me with the great pictures.
